- The inauguration of the Noguera Pallaresa aquatic Georoute commemorates the seventh anniversary of the UNESCO Global Geopark Orígens.
- The event also commemorates International Mother Earth Day.
Last Thursday, April 17, marked the celebration of the seventh anniversary of the UNESCO Global Geopark Orígens. The event highlighted the value of the geological heritage of the Collegats gorge and helped to raise awareness of the UNESCO recognition that this territory has held since April 2018. The activity was organized in collaboration with the Baix Pallars Town Council, the Gerri de la Sal Museum, and the partnering organization La Rafting Company. The day focused particularly on the connection between geology and both biological and cultural values, as well as the importance of protecting the environment, as promoted by Mother Earth Day.

The celebration began in Gerri de la Sal, where a group of 20 participants enjoyed a free guided tour of the Gerri Museum, located in the former salt warehouse. This visit provided insights into the history and evolution of the salt pans and their socioeconomic impact over time. In addition, the origin of Gerri’s salt was explained.
Afterwards, members of the Geopark team presented the new aquatic Georoute at the information panel located in the Gerri de la Sal parking area. Subsequently, 21 participants traveled to Sort, where the partnering organization La Rafting Company provided all the necessary equipment for a 14-kilometer rafting descent along the Noguera Pallaresa river, between the municipalities of Baix Pallars and La Pobla de Segur. This Georoute, created last year, is designed as a rafting or kayaking route ideal for beginners, offering the chance to enjoy an impressive landscape and understand the geological and natural significance of the area, while promoting its conservation.

The guidance provided by the Orígens Geopark to the La Rafting Company team enriched the activity by incorporating content about the area’s geological, natural, and cultural heritage, allowing participants to enjoy an experience that combines the thrill of rafting with the natural beauty of the Noguera Pallaresa.
UNESCO Global Geoparks celebrate International Mother Earth Day every year on April 22, which this year marks its 55th anniversary. The words “Geopark” and “geology” come from the Greek root “Gea,” also known as “Gaia,” the goddess who represents Mother Earth in Greek mythology. The Orígens Geopark takes part in this celebration, which advocates for continued care of our planet.
