- The video premieres today, June 17, on the Orígens Geopark YouTube channel.
- It consists of a class taught by professor Josep Anton Muñoz, from the Pla de Guineu viewpoint.
- The video is entitled Formació dels Pirineus: La discordança de Comte a Gerri de la Sal can be viewed at https://youtu.be/9dA3KUD6lHI.
In September 2024, 42 people participated in a field trip to Gerri de la Sal, at the Pla de Guineu viewpoint, to know one of the most geologically relevant points of the Orígens Geopark: the Comte unconformity. The day included a master class by Dr. Josep Anton Muñoz, professor of structural geology at the Faculty of Earth Sciences of the University of Barcelona.
This initiative aims to make high-quality scientific content on the geological history of the Pyrenees available to the general public, through informative presentations in natural spaces of great interest. In this context, viewers will understand how the rocks visible in Gerri de la Sal explain the main episodes of formation of the mountain range: a first episode of uplift of a large mountain range, called the Hercynian orogeny, approximately 300 million years ago, and the Alpine orogeny, which began about 85 million years ago, to give rise to the current Pyrenees mountain range. These geological processes gave rise to formations as significant as the Comte unconformity, a key structure for understanding the origin and evolution of this mountain range.
Today, June 17, the video recorded during this presentation is made public. The audiovisual material is incorporated into the collection of geological videos of the Orígens Geopark, accessible through its YouTube channel. The collection already has two published recordings, and will soon be completed with two more videos: one recorded in the Congost de Collegats in the municipality of La Pobla de Segur, and another between the Coll de Fades and Coll de Sas in the municipality of Sarroca de Bellera.
It was possible to carry out this activity thanks to the collaboration of the Baix Pallars City Council, the Lleida Provincial Council Economic Promotion Board, the University of Barcelona, the Geomodels Research Institute, the Generalitat de Catalunya and the VIGEOCULT project, A natural open museum in the Pyrenees: virtual reality experience for dissemination and conservation of the geological and cultural heritage, funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/50110001103 and by the European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR.
