The route

Itinerary on the southeast border of the Geopark with excellent views of the Montsec. The Puig de Meià keeps a close watch on the valley, which is why the castle and the original village of Vilanova de Meià were built in this natural vantage point.

The surrounding landscape, with rocks representing more than 220 million years of geological history, boasts many attractions: a variety of mediaeval fortifications, caves, chasms and mountain climbing areas such as the emblematic Roca dels Arcs wall.

What not to miss along the route

  1. Centre d’interpretació del Montsec de Meià.
  2. Parish church of Sant Salvador: A church from the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles, dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries.
  3. Viewpoint and Dolmen of Cogulló: This spot offers a double attraction, featuring a megalithic tomb dating from 1500-1100 BC and breathtaking panoramic views.
  4. Cave of Castejón: Located in the Espluga area, this cave is home to karst formations like sinkholes and other cavities locally called “querants.”
  5. Puig de Meià: An excellent panoramic viewpoint of the Coma de Meià, where the old village of Vilanova once stood. Today, visitors can view the remains of the 11th-century Castle of Meià and the Romanesque Ermita de la Mare de Déu del Puig, which was once the Church of Sant Cristòfol.
  6. Gorge of the Escala del Pas Nou:A route featuring imposing vertical limestone cliffs that once connected the Coma de Meià with the Pallars Jussà via a horseshoe-shaped path.
