Orígens Geopark improves the paleontological site of Orcau 2 with the installation of a pergola

  • The installation of the new pergola favors research and school and tourist visits during the summer.
  • A sustainable pergola in the Orcau 2 site to adapt to the effects of climate change.

The Orcau 2 site is one of the most prominent and popular dinosaur sites in the Orígens Geopark, on which numerous studies and scientific articles have been published. It is considered one of the reference points for paleontological research and dissemination in the Conca Dellà and the Geopark as a whole.

In this site, dozens of footprints are preserved that are attributed to dinosaurs from the group of titanosaurs, of large dimensions and quadrupeds, with an extraordinarily long neck and tail. Two morphologies of footprints can be distinguished, which correspond to the shape of the foot and hand of the dinosaur that produced them.

Pergola installed in the Orcau 2 space by the Geoparc’s collaborating entity Salvatgines.

Orígens Geopark has promoted the installation of a pergola and a bench in the space of Orcau 2, with the aim of improving working, study and visiting conditions during the hottest months of the year. This action has been possible thanks to the financing of the Institute for the Development and Promotion of the Alt Pirineu and Aran (IDAPA), with the collaboration of the Isona i Conca Dellà Town Council and the Conca Dellà Museum, and with the installation in charge of the Geoparc’s collaborating entity, Salvatgines.

The initiative arises at the request from Tremp’s “Camp d’Aprenentage”(learning center) , which develops educational and research activities with numerous students throughout the year, especially during the months of May and June. The space also receives school visits from the territory, exits from the Museo de la Conca Dellà and groups of tourists interested in paleontological heritage. The new pergola will act as a climate shelter and will improve the comfort and safety of all these activities, avoiding intense heat and facilitating field work.

In addition to the installation of the pergola, the Salvatgines entity has carried out the repair of the rope and the stairs located next to the site, improving its accessibility and security.

With actions like this, Orígens Geopark reinforces its work of supporting research, education and scientific dissemination, improving the conditions of the spaces that allow students, researchers and visitors to the territory to get closer to geology and paleontology.
