The scientific coordinator of the Orígens Geopark participated in the International Intensive Course on Geoparks which is organized every year by the Global Network of Geoparcs and, since about three years ago, is co-organized with UNESCO.
The course is taught by the Geography Department of the University of the Aegean and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, at the UNESCO Global Geopark of the Island of Lesvos, in Greece.
This year it was planned to celebrate its 12th edition from June 1st to 10th, but due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19, this edition has been held through a digital platform, in sessions of five hours a day from June 10th to 26th.
The Intensive Course on Geoparks 2020 has focused on the development of UNESCO Global Geoparks as territories of resilience. Resilience is a fundamental concept included within the Geopark definition and is related to the ability to face an environmental or humanitarian crisis: earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions, droughts, economic crises, epidemics, terrorism, wars, refugees and, of course, COVID-19.
This year it was planned to celebrate its 12th edition from June 1 to 10 but due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19, this edition has been held through a digital platform, in five-hour sessions
The course has offered the opportunity to discover how Geoparks can have a real impact on local communities and society during the COVID-19 crisis, but above all, it has provided conceptual questions about UNESCO Global Geoparks.
The course attendees, a total of 136 participants from 40 different countries, were technicians from UNESCO Global Geoparks or from Geoparcs aspiring territories, and academics.
During the course, it was offered the possibility of presenting the territories represented by the attendees. Therefore, from the Orígens Geopark, it was made a presentation on the territory and the most relevant projects that are currently being developed. In this way the Catalan territory was promoted in this international context
