Intangible cultural heritage
Starlight Reserve and Touristic Destination certificate
- In 2013, the Montsec mountain range and its surroundings, an area of 24 municipalities, some of which within the Geopark, were certified as a Tourist Destination, while 11 municipalities were awarded the Starlight Reserve insignia, the highest designation quality for the dark sky.
- The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park received the certification in 2018.
This certification is managed by the Starlight Foundation following the agreements of the Starlight Initiative and the Declaration of La Palma (2007). On the one hand, the initiative has the support of UNESCO, the World Tourism Organization and the International Astronomical Union, among many others. On the other hand, in the Declaration of La Palma the night sky is defined as a cultural, scientific and historical heritage, and it is recognized that the observation of the sky is a key element for our knowledge. The Declaration promotes education based on these ideas and sustainable tourism as a tool to communicate the preservation of the night sky.
Falles del Pirineu
The torches of the Pyrenees have been Intangible Heritage of Humanity since 2015. The Pyrenees Summer Solstice Fire Festivities bring together 63 celebrations, including Les Falles de La Pobla de Segur, in the Orígens Geopark.
Festa dels Raiers
The Raiers festival, which preserves the memory of a historical profession, was also declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2022. Decades ago, the wood extracted from the forests was transported by the rivers of the Pyrenees to the big cities by rafts. This ancient trade is currently commemorated in the Geopark towns of Pont de Claverol (Pallars Jussà) and Coll de Nargó (Alt Urgell).
